OH, I 100% agree on Crichton/Andromeda Strain. I love the movie.
as for the books in cat II:
I don't think these books are bad. I liked them a lot. Some of the Foundation books were among my favorite SciFi books. But I wouldn't call them good literature. The characters are all very 1-dimensional, they also have no arc. Also, the books don't follow a “normal” narrative structure. They are more like reports than novels. Almost the same is true for Dragon Tattoo.
