According to the internet knowitalls, when I was considering getting #solar panels, I was definitely too far north to ever get any benefit from it. There's never any sun and panels are at the wrong angle and there's no more feed-in tariffs and blah blah blah.

Meanwhile: hello, negative electricity bill time of year. ⚡️

@honze_net I absolutely agree.

I haven't posted publicly about this yet (I plan to do a write-up soon) but pix.lgbt and homestead.social are built on a cluster (all on Raspberry Pis) that I built to be fully mobile (literally has a handle on it), with a solar powered battery backup, and dual mobile WANs (fully encrypted over Wireguard VPN) in case we need to flee.

We're not going anywhere!

"To our untrained eye, a corn field looks more “natural” than arrays of solar panels. But that field is a biological desert .. sprayed with pest- and herbicides. Put up some solar panels, and add plants that only need to be mowed once a year (sometimes with sheep) and you see an explosion of life."

@exador23 as I am building a small off-grid PV setup too... what kind of sockets/plugs do you use for 12V stuff like outlets to plug in devices? Right now my favorite is XLR (rugged, cheap, can carry some amps, panel mount available)

Lessons for high rooftop solar, as learnt from South Australia.

In South Australia’s case, the huge rooftop solar resource, which now regularly meets all of the state’s demand and then some, sending wholesale prices into negative territory for thousands of hours a year.

“And while much of the energy sector has been asking, ‘What does the future look like?’ in South Australia, we’ve been living it – and adapting in real time.”

Rooftop solar is a “burning platform,” warns network boss: “Don’t wait for the fire”

Network boss wants stronger, faster collaboration on distributed energy reform, to avoid repeating mistakes – and to fast-track benefits long-promised to consumers.

Spain Blackout.

-Renewables not blame.
-Renewables helped in recovery
-Conventional thermal plants being paid to stabilise grid didn't and make it worse.

- More grid forming inverters batteries and synchronous condensers needed.
-Needs to learn from the South Australian blackout.

We need more batteries: Spain turns to new technologies after thermal plants fail in blackout

First report on Spain blackout blames grid operator for mistakes, thermal power plants for failing to do what they were paid to, and cites need for batteries and a smarter grid.

Sunny outlook: Major survey shows most near neighbours like solar farms, and want more

Living near a large-scale solar project is not a problem for most residents, with a study finding 82 per cent of neighbours would allow more to be built nearby.
