about stealth solar where people attach #solarpanels to places in a subtle way to capture the sun's energy

#msnow had a 2min segment on just off the shelf system to charge his #EV

seems there are no rules in his town, see video

@smallsolar unsure if this counts but I got 3 450wp panels sitting upright against my garden fencing. Main reason for it is that in the winter at noon the sun hits this spot basically exactly head-on, so I still get ~1-1.5kw of power out of this in the winter despite the dutch latitude

Do you have an example of stealth solar?

I've been thinking a lot about 'stealth solar' where people attach #solarpanels to places in a subtle way to capture the sun's energy. It might be stealth as there are strict rules or just want to keep it low key. #balconysolar is sort of stealth gone mainstream.

With cheaper MPPT devices you can now accept slightly poorer efficiency due to placement and with microinverters don't need to make long strings. I particularly think that there is no point having a solar panel in storage, best get it out there and generating even if it's in a temporary place!

So I thought I'd start a small website that documents different stealth setups, so if you have cheeky solar panels and would be willing to share a little info (but not too much if it would get you in trouble) get in touch.

@smallsolar In some flats where balcony solar isn't allowed because the landlord is a bastard, people have been building solar tables, which is just a panel with four legs. There is no rule against having a table on your balcony and no rule what a table has to be made of. You'll probably find many pictures if you search for "solartisch".

They can be used as table as well (best use a table cloth to avoid scratching the glass, although it is pretty tough).

@smallsolar I've a little 10W panel on the shed roof. It used to keep a Pi running, now it powers a humidity sensor to control a dehumidifier.

#Africa’s #cellphone towers turn to #solar as diesel costs surge

By ALLAN OLINGO, Updated 12:04 AM EDT, May 2, 2026

NAIROBI, #Kenya (AP) — "Rising diesel prices linked to the Iran war are adding urgency to a shift already underway across Africa to move cellphone towers off #FossilFuels and onto #SolarPower.

"Diesel, which powers the majority of Africa’s roughly 500,000 telecommunications towers, has become more expensive and sometimes harder to secure in recent weeks as global fuel markets tightened following the conflict. Several African countries that rely heavily on imported fuel have reported price spikes and supply disruptions, prompting governments and companies to reassess energy strategies.

"The transition to cleaner power for the towers that provide cellphone service predates the latest price shocks, driven by cost pressures and climate goals. But the war in the Middle East has accelerated the push.

" 'Diesel has always been a major cost, but recent global events have made it even more volatile,' said Lande Abudu, senior energy specialist for Africa at GSMA, a global industry organization representing mobile operators. “That strengthens the case for solar and hybrid solutions.' "

Solar-powered cell towers in Africa curb costs, emissions and outages

Cellphone tower operators across Africa are increasingly turning to solar power to reduce reliance on costly diesel fuel and expand connectivity in off-grid areas. Diesel still powers most towers — and there are roughly 500,000 telecommunications towers across the continent — but rising fuel prices, falling solar costs and new financing models are accelerating a shift to hybrid and solar systems. The Iran war has exacerbated those supply issues. The transition could cut emissions, lower operating costs and improve network reliability. However, high up-front investment, battery limitations and operational risks mean adoption is likely to remain gradual in the near term.

China’s solar exports doubled in a single month, rising to a new record of 68 gigawatts in March and 50 countries - broke records for imports of Chinese solar panels; exports of batteries and EVs also jumped

Demand was particularly high in countries hardest hit by the oil crunch, such as India and the Philippines. Nations aren’t just focused on oil. They’re securing more reliable energy supplies to avoid the next disruption

Bye bye diesel in the remotest corners of the planet as cheap clean solar takes over

Many Amazonian communities aren’t connected to the grid In remote areas with no roads, transmission lines are difficult to build + maintain They depend on polluting diesel fuel for electricity

Diesel, transported by boat, is burned by about 160 thermal plants + thousands of generators scattered in the rainforest

Solar + batteries are beginning to transform the region, supplementing/replacing diesel altogether

Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun. Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety-two million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.

"In the Philippines, imports of solar panels from China during March alone were sufficient to increase total solar capacity by half, relative to levels at the end of 2025. In Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Pakistan, trade was sufficient to boost installations by a quarter or more. One Manila-based solar installer told local news site Rappler that they were signing as many as 10 times more contracts per month than before the war."

This oil shock will hit Asia harder than the 1970s

Europe’s oil demand never recovered from the shocks of the 1970s. If the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz doesn’t end soon, a dramatic transformation awaits in Asia.
