The great thing about building your own little sites is that you can choose to leave a ridiculous pagination nav just like this without fancy ellipsis etc

Hello, I'm Sia. A developer, clearly not a designer.

First post on Mastodon! I'm going to try to do a thread of talks and podcasts I've done in case anyone wants to check them out.

First up, this week I had the amazing opportunity to be on the Catching Up with Web Performance! This is an awesome podcast that tells the story of how people got to where they are in their careers.

If you know me, you know I love hearing and telling these stories, so it was a ton of fun! Check it out: https://catchingup.dev/podcasts/annie-sullivan/

"not stress tested"... full data set took 5.46s to build... wow (as in amazingly faster than I thought)

Welcome, friends!

I have a personal rule about contributing to the "meta discourse" about the platforms we use on those platforms, but will break that rule in this thread to share a few recommendations for the Twitter transplants.

One of the biggest things is thinking about Mastodon as a new thing rather than a Twitter replacement. This can be hard since it looks a lot like twitter, but it's different enough that you're gonna get annoyed by those differences.

Instead, let's embrace 'em: 🧵

Inspired by @zachleat @zachleat and built on #eleventy of course

FYI I think Zach and @nhoizey are working on something to publish soon too?

Own Your Content on Social Media Using the IndieWeb—zachleat.com

So I started building a PESOS site for my twitter archive, and I think the MVP is complete though not stress-tested for my full data set.

Originally I was going to link to the twitter API to pull in new content but now I think I'll switch to POSSE (my notes cross posted to other social) or maybe PESOS from mastodon with my twitter archive as the history for a new "notes" collection.

Anyway, here's a preview and the source code

reasons mastodon's "viral dampening effect" is a good thing:

👉🏻 no "main character of the day"
👉🏻 no free text searching for people to get angry at (and harrass)
👉🏻 doomscrolling is *actually bad for you* and not a thing we should be trying to replicate
👉🏻 birdsite's virality is heavily driven by actual paid advertising and bots. You think that "Explore" tab gets its content organically? really? That's not making connections between people, it's about driving sales.

Mastodon is not, and should not be, a 1:1 replacement for Twitter. But it *can* be a new place for you to make valuable connections with other human beings. #twitter #twittermigration

The last time we had a big user influx (when Melon Husk announced buying birdsite back in April), a lot of our new users experienced an emotional surge on realising that they didn't have to compete with the algorithms any more; no punishment for using or not using hashtags, for including links in posts, for posting too little or too often. A lot of people were deep in creative blocks from the stress of it all.

You're free from that here. There is no pressure to create or post constantly. (cont)

How do you decide which server to join? I joined this one by default but thinking of moving to the indieweb one for the local feed. Or trying to start a web perf one.

I guess my question is do they get annoyed if you post a lot of stuff unrelated to that topic? I can't commit to only one topic 😃
