Here’s an idea: let’s call people “people” on the fediverse instead of “users” whenever we can.

Compare:

“There are 42 users on this instance.”

vs

“There are 42 people on this instance.”

Which acknowledges our humanity more?

Language matters. We don’t need to perpetuate mainstream technology’s othering/colonial framing of “us” – designers/developers/other “clever folks” – and “them” – the users (usually one step removed from “dumb user” and usually the ones who get used).

Mastodon has proven that social media can be fun and safe without bullies!

Engage in discussions without being harassed. Respect for each other is important here. You don't have to agree with everyone ofc but talking about it is so much better than name-calling for example.

I think we can show the world that social media can also be a positive factor in life instead of stress and a dark shadow

No more personal use of that account, and I hope to wrap up my professional use of it as more colleagues migrate to other locations.

As a woman in STEM with a relatively large following I often dealt with harassment there, and I'm not willing to "wait it out" like others.
