Before Bella left with Alice to Volterra, she left a note for Charlie that said:
“Dad,
I’m with Alice. Edward’s in trouble. You can ground me when I get back. I know it’s a bad time. Sorry.

When Bella came back, she told Charlie that Alice told Rosalie about her jumping off the cliff, and Rosalie told Edward. Since Edward wouldn’t answer his phone, Alice dragged Bella to L.A. to explain everything to him in person
