"When I hear Trump, Rubio & their European acolytes, I wonder why so few EU political elite dare to say out loud:

- That we have heard this stigmatising language of exclusion before
- We know where it can lead.
- That we are not going to follow the US’s lead.
- That colonialism was not a glorious enterprise but caused immense death and destruction.
- That once, Jews, too, were portrayed as a threat to white Christian Europe and accused of weakening nations from within."

The US is dragging Europe back to the days of white supremacism. Our leaders are playing along

People like me were targets of the Islamophobia that gripped the west after the US-led ‘war on terror’. Now I fear a chilling sequel is on the way, says Shada Islam, a Brussels-based commentator on EU affairs

"Grey goo" originally described mis-specified self-replicating nanobots consuming everything in pursuit of a simple goal with no stopping rule.
What we have instead is humans repeatedly choosing #ecocide, ignoring all data and all experience in pursuit of owning the last scrap of wealth before self-extermination.

"#Housing is fundamentally a question of #distribution and #SocialRights, not merely #construction targets. It shapes who can live where, access what opportunities, and build what kind of life. A progressive housing agenda must be bold enough to challenge the norm that housing has become an #asset for #WealthAccumulation, and ambitious enough to build the broad #coalitions of support necessary for sustained #PublicInvestment."

"[All political parties] have significantly reduced #SocialHousing, deregulated #RentalMarkets and created new investment and market structures that affect house prices.
These reforms have eroded #housing as a #SocialRight. The inequalities of who can live where, and under what conditions, have created massive grievances among a large share of the population. These grievances contribute to the increasing #electoral success of the #RadicalRight."

The mantra of ‘build, build, build’ misses something crucial: that few can afford these new homes, say Tarik Abou-Chadi, Silja Häusermann and Björn Bremer

“Some of the language you hear now about refugees, the [British National Party] BNP would have used a few decades ago, and everyone was aghast at it then. And this is where mainstream politics now is.”

Both in #Britain and #Ireland the language of #bigotry, #hate and #exclusion have become commonplace. Things unsaid ten years ago are now soundbites from #politicians of all parties, #journalists, #radio talk hosts and #media #opinion writers.

We have slid into #fascism.

‘We thought the Rwanda scheme was the worst of it’: Enver Solomon on leading – and leaving – the Refugee Council

It has been a difficult week for those working with refugees and migrants in the UK, after Labour announced controversial new plans. Sadly, Solomon is used to such turmoil. He discusses hostility, hope and asylum hotels

“It’s a silly edit, but it’s an edit made in the context of not contemplating for a moment that British journalists, never mind Donald #Trump’s fan boys and girls, would be queueing up to pretend that his lies were truth.”

“So in that edit, at that moment, it wouldn’t have crossed anybody’s mind that they’d have to defend themselves against accusations of undermining the idea that he incited an insurrection, because he so obviously did.”
