I've seen sphene! (Sounds better than "the rock is tight with titanite")

Centimeter-size black sphene (titanite) with apatite (dark brown) and orthoclase feldspar (light brown). Folding pocket knife for scale.

From the Bancroft locality in Ontario, Canada. Grenville-aged (~1.2± billion years)

Beautiful #titanite from a gneiss from Finnøya, Norway, as seen in thin section (plane light, crossed polarized light). The clear, rounded inclusions are apatite. Field of view ~0.5 mm. #MinCup24
#kyanite is famously blue but it can also be green, white, black, and a wide range of blues.

#kyanite galore in #MinCup24!

RIP Steve Silberman.

His husband has announced his passing away at https://bsky.app/profile/wardqnormal.bsky.social/post/3l2uljphb2p2e

Very sad news. He was such a kind person and a great ally to #Autists. With a colleague we had a lovely chat with Steve during one of his visits to London in 2019: https://www.flickr.com/photos/acrostich/48127822607/

#ThinSectionThursday Beautiful symplectite coronas around pink (black) garnets in this garnet-clinopyroxene-amphibole-plagioclase-scapolite gneiss from the Lewisian complex in South Harris. Field of view ca. 2mm wide. #Geology #Metamorphic #Microscopy #Texture

Plain light thin section (~ 4 cm wide)
Pale pink garnets (inclusion-rich cores and inclusion-free rims) surrounded by mostly biotite.

From the Nuvvuagittuq formation near #Inukjuak Canada.

Coupled Sm-Nd isotopes suggest that the original rock (the protolith) may be as old as 4.3 billion years. This sample has been pervasively metamorphosed at least four times since then.

A day late for this weeks #ThinSectionThursday, here's some more epidote, this time from highly altered basalt lavas high on Ben More in Mull, viewed under a polarizing microscope. The bright (pale greenish) crystals of epidote are intergrown with grey (clear) fibrous zeolite mineral. Field of view about 2mm wide. See Alt text for more info. #Geology #Microscopy #Mull #Petrography #Mineralogy

For nearly six days, water was accumulating behind a 30-metre-high debris accumulation deposited by a massive landslide across Chilcotin River.

The river reduced to a trickle.

But on Monday, the B.C. Interior finally got the alert they were waiting for.
