Russia amplified hurricane disinformation to drive Americans apart, researchers find

New research shows Russia has worked to amplify false and misleading claims about the U.S. government's response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton as part of the Kremlin's efforts to manipulate Americans before the Nov. 5 election. The research comes from the London-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue. Researchers found that posts linked to Russian state media and online accounts spread English-language content that was designed to reduce American confidence in the federal response to the storms. It's an approach consistent with past Russian disinformation campaigns.

@copter_chief People throw the word “sacrifice” around a lot when speaking of military service, usually to denote the loss of life.

I happen to believe that the sacrifices made on a routine basis by service members are routinely underrated as to their true impact upon them.

As I write this response, I am standing outside in shorts and no shirt, in Massachusetts. And I am deeply unsettled that I am able to do so. Because I know it is going to get so much worse as we continue to lose the season that makes my home so beautiful.

@copter_chief Right there with you my friend. Western Mass has suffered heavily from the idiot yard sign proliferation. Breathing exercises are required when driving around.

@dogzilla When I flood him with examples of the threat of facism, ask him if he has read Project 2025, it is all brushed off. He doesn’t watch shit, doesn’t read shit and most importantly, he doesn’t WANT to be aware on the level that I am. The End.

@dogzilla He is blissfully unaware of current events and what transpires on a daily basis. He is not on here following @GottaLaff and watching the videos from trump rallies and interviews.

What he sees is Fox Business articles that tell him that the US economy is in terrible shape and coming apart due to Biden’s policies.

The point is, he exists in a different world and his mind is made up. When I send him a report of Mark Milley’s threat about trump, “Yeah that is just one guy.” (Continued)

@dogzilla I can only offer my personal experience over the last couple weeks of engaging with a trump supporter. I find him to be a very typical guy and he is not maga or over the top with his dedication.

Nothing matters. No matter what I throw at him, it simply doesn’t matter. Why? Because he is living behind a firewall of falsehood and insulated by a blanket of ignorance, perfectly comfortable in his house that is built upon a foundation of racism. (Continued)
