We will be present at VLCTechFest this Saturday to talk about the problems caused by the massive data collections made by companies and States, and their impacts on our daily lives and democratises.

https://vlctechfest.org/en/

The talk will be given by @Skyper, and its description is as follows:

"But I Have Nothing To Hide! Or How Big Techs and States made you believe so

Data collection has become something that is hard to avoid in our modern societies. From telemetry to sensible personal data, many companies and even state actors rely on it for carrying out their operations. But is it really an issue? After all, I have nothing to hide.

What if I tell you that women were persecuted in the USA because they played to Candy Crush or used Tinder, and that their location data were sold to law enforcement which now criminalises people going to abortion clinics in some states? Or that it isn’t that difficult to figure out the real identity of spies with publicly sold data for little money? And when the data isn’t already available, state actors don’t hesitate to hack their own population, including in democratic countries like France and Spain.

Data collection has tangible impacts on our societies and democracies. Whether it’s for making business profits or controlling its own population while weakening adversary countries, the goal is the same: control. And with the current AI trend, data collection is reaching unprecedented highs.

So, what can we do about it in 2026? Thankfully, many technical and legal solutions exist, and we all have a role to play in it. Whether you are an entrepreneur, someone involved into the creation of a software, or a simple user, your choices can have a positive impact."

It is a free event, so come join us if you can!

🎉 The critical amendment 34 (rejecting automated assessment of unknown photos and texts) PASSED by ONE vote, paving the way for the extension of Chat Control 1.0 to be overwhelmingly REJECTED!

"But when his homegrown remote control app started talking to DJI’s servers, it wasn’t just one vacuum cleaner that replied. Roughly 7,000 of them, all around the world, began treating Azdoufal like their boss.

He could remotely control them, and look and listen through their live camera feeds, he tells me, saying he tested that out with a friend. He could watch them map out each room of a house, generating a complete 2D floor plan. He could use any robot’s IP address to find its rough location."

In case you're working on IoT devices, maybe you should consider including security practitioners into your development process 🙃

The DJI Romo robovac had security so poor, this man remotely accessed thousands of them

A man discovered that thousands of DJI Romo robot vacuums had a security issue that could have let strangers look into owners’ homes and remotely control them.

That's a great victory, even though it shows why Justice takes so much time. More than one year of battling to make Google agree to respect the law! And we're just talking about the homescreen hotseat here...

In all cases, thanks to @owa and the others who took part of this work. Keep up the great work ✊

🔬 A new definition of ‘scientific research’ could soon lead to companies claiming to do just that without actually conducting science or research – at least if the #EU Commission's #DigitalOmnibus proposal passes. 🚌

"“This system not only detects their faces and movements, but also creates a ‘social map’ of their friends and relationships, along with other information such as license plates,” said Nima Fatemi, founder of Kandoo, an NGO working on cybersecurity for vulnerable populations, after consulting the confidential documents. “It allows you to track the targeted person’s movements and monitor everyone, everywhere. It is a centralized tool for learning who is who and how individuals are connected.”"
