Capitalism is a denial-of-service attack on human potential

@theleftistlawyer it matters that SPLC would not have been indicted if we had elected a different president; this administration has repurposed this system.

(It also matters that no one in the Epstein files was indicted under the previous president; it would have to have been repurposed differently to do that)

The thing that kills me about all this is that after years of building up kind/human/caring community around me, ppl I appreciated because of those traits suddenly drop all semblance of caring about them because.... they have the perception of coding a bit better/faster. That's all it took.

I'll say it straight: you can't voluntarily and willingly use LLMs in a way that's aligned with respect for marginalized folks, with respect for the environment, with respect for labor issues and rights, with respect for art, and with respect for the community aspects of things like open source.

It is simply impossible. Pretending you can is the deepest form of cognitive dissonance and I'm just beyond disturbed to see it happening all around me.

I've already unfollowed so many folks I once respected, blocked some others, and just generally withdrawn from a community that used to be so personally fulfilling to be a part of. It's really sad.

@timnitGebru I went looking for a recording, and the one I found matches most of that page but one of the differences is that it doesn’t have that quote or the bits before and after: https://youtu.be/J_L9GS4-XH4

How else can I confirm that he actually said this?

@inthehands huh. I used to want it to be possible for everyone to have housplant-style software on their own computer, managed by the user, long before this LLM craze. Never had a good idea for how it would work, and stopped thinking about it as computing got more and more onerous. But I still think it would be good to have a mechanism for it, tho LLMs would be a bad way to go about it

@ireneista my old idea was a pair of taxes, one on low wages and one on high rents, to push the maximum rent down to maybe 25% of the median income from jobs within a ~mile, and to push the minimum income up to the corresponding multiple of the median rent.

Now I think we should discourage long-term residential renting (and encourage home ownership), maybe by multiplying property taxes by the number of homes owned, so a landlord owning hundreds of apartments isn’t viable

@BestGirlGrace
Math is two things:
- A set of notations for describing relationships;
- A set of techniques for reasoning about those relationships.

Many of the relationships we describe and reason about are discovered, as are relationships-between-relationships, but the notations and techniques are necessarily invented.

@MAKS23 Biden should have told Russia to get out of Ukraine or we will fulfill our treaty obligation to protect them
@jwcph @ahumanbeinz @Remittancegirl if you want me to believe that you have some special insight that’s been missed by all of our activists and concerned citizens who are leading opposition based on decades of experience working in and studying our political systems and power dynamics, then you’re going to have to share something about what that insight consists of
@jonberger @msbellows @Jimijamflimflam @billd This does get at why I call LLMs a fascist technology: because there's an implicit ideological premise, that people are nothing more than LLMs, that we are just machines and should be replaced by newer machines.
@jwcph @ahumanbeinz @Remittancegirl just what means do you think we have?
