A key feature of life in electoral “democracies,” in which people are alleged to have meaningful control over their lives and choices, is the constant awareness that we are actually at the mercy of vast and impersonal institutions, public and private, that control most aspects of our lives and can cause us immense harms on a whim or the result of a trivial error and we have virtually no say over these institutions or recourse for these harms.
