This was especially true for the time realm. I needed to describe not only what it looked, smelled, and sounded like, but also how it affected the MC within it.

The time realm is also where souls (when they're not in the material realm) exist. Most souls search for their twin as unconscious orbs, but the MC... let's just say, they're fully aware of what's happening.

The whole experience really messed with the MC's head. I'll say nothing further, though, to avoid spoilers.

#WritersCoffeeClub 25Aug—Talk about a way you've described the indescribable. If you can!

There are lots of indescribable things in my work, especially in book 3. I use two approaches with such things:

1) compare it to something known, and/or
2) evoke the appropriate senses

There are three realms in my universe: material, time, and space. Most of my stories exist in the material realm, but in TWOTW book 3 we also see time and space. Both are mostly unknown, so I evoked the senses.

#WritersCoffeeClub Aug 24: Have you ever written a work that was a retelling of another work?
Yes! Pride and Prejudice at The Cat Café is a modern adaptation of ... you can probably guess, Pride and Prejudice - set at a cat cafe! “I had several laugh-out-loud moments – really out loud in the hotel room all by myself!” - review

#WritersCoffeeClub 23, Do you tend towards writing personal or universal cataclysms? Why?

The cataclysms in my writing are tied to my characters' understanding of, and perspective on, reality. I like toying with the subjectiveness of reality and wrap a lot of metaphysics in amusing, pretty symbolism.

There is something delightfully human about contemplating infinity while cutting your toenails.

#writerscoffeeclub for August 23:

Do you tend towards writing personal or universal cataclysms? Why?

A universal cataclysm, written correctly, is some number N of simultaneous personal cataclysms. A personal cataclysm, emphatically realized, is a universal cataclysm for one.

#WritersCoffeeClub 24Aug—Have you ever written a work that was a retelling of another work?

I have not. Although, I got an idea for a retelling the other day. I'm letting it steep, to see if it's worth pursuing.

It's also important to note that universal (or world) cataclysms don't have to be on epic scales.

Example: in my MG story, Collin goes on an adventure. In the context of this question, the cataclysm is personal. But just because there isn't a universal cataclysm doesn't mean the world isn't changed. In truth, it has changed dramatically for Collin.

It's a subtle universal cataclysm. A worldview shift for the character because of what he's experienced. It's both personal *and* universal.

#WritersCoffeeClub 23Aug—Do you tend towards writing personal or universal cataclysms? Why?

Both. Because IMO, the best stories have both.

Personal cataclysms develop characters. Universal (or world) cataclysms advance the plot. Both are necessary, even if one is more pronounced than the other.

TWOTW series starts with more personal, but transitions to more universal. It's a slow, natural progression over four books, and creates a well-rounded story. At least, I think it does. 🤷‍♀️

#WordWeavers Aug 23: Do you ever worry that your books may offend others or be banned?

Worry? Why would that worry me? When fragile people call for books to be banned, to me that says the book has a very important message which everyone should hear. So go ahead, ban my books. I'll personally drive around looking for little free libraries to leave copies in.

(If I ever finish a book anyway.)
