@jeffjarvis tbh when I was doing my MA, I was obsessed with how much narrative in American television/film pulled from Freudian theory (trauma/repression/recovery/resolution). This theory isn't that complex tbh – behaviorism has maintained a hold in a lot of areas of our culture (especially parenting). But we're really seeing it in how we explain the impacts of algorithmic systems...

@krisnelson I think it's probably happening on all sides – technologists sold these systems using the behaviorist paradigm, but we're also trying to explain their influence using that same paradigm. @Chanders has written about this. But it has only recently occurred to me that behaviorism is the paradigm they are pulling from.
