My very small amount of mixing knowledge:
1: Gain staging! I usually shoot for -6, but some people do -12 for more kick room. But I don't do much with kicks, so...

2: Keep all reverb/delay on the main unless you really need it on an instrument. Remember what it's supposed to simulate!

3: Better composition is so much easier than fighting waveforms with EQ/compression.
