I'm a medieval archaeologist who works with open knowledge. Posts will inevitably descend into castles, cricket, and Star Trek.

Banner photo is Pevensey Castle in Sussex. It's one of my favourite castles. My photo and licensed CC-BY-SA 4.0.

#GLAMWikiPT has been a thought provoking conference, with lots to ponder and plenty of inspirational stories. The presentation by Olena Vinsent and Viacheslav Mamon of Wikimedia Ukraine was especially important. They've been using the Wiki Loves Monuments photography competition to gather images of heritage sites threatened by war. There is emphasis on sites that have been damaged or destroyed by the ongoing war. Without these efforts, heritage disappears from view.

An insightful quote from Oliver Creighton in his 2012 book 'Early Medieval Castles': "the slighting and desecration of a donjon could in certain instances mark the discontinuity of lordship" #slighting #archaeology #castles

One of the best examples is the destruction of Kenilworth Castle in the mid-17th century. It's not a medieval event, but the same idea of discontinuity applies.

There are lots of medieval depictions of warfare and destruction, but not many that I can point to and confidently say that they show slighting.

This is my favourite. It's from a late 15th-century Swiss chronicle and shows the destruction of Landshut Castle more than a century earlier.

Its shows the late medieval understanding of what was involved. In this case: soldiers breaking down the castle walls and damaging a building carrying the coat of arms of the family that held the castle.

Here's hoping the good weather holds for Saturday when I'll be leading a couple of tours around Pevensey Castle https://englishheritage.seetickets.com/event/puzzling-over-pevensey-the-demolishing-of-1216/pevensey-castle-east-sussex/3357399 #archaeology #castleslighting #PevenseyCastle

The time has come to make a decision.

Is a silly name enough to justify buying a new game?

Time to bid farewell to these boots. I've had them since my first year at uni. They've seen of more than a few pairs of socks, but they stopped being practical a long time ago and were overdue to be replaced.
One of my favourite things is walking round a historic site being completely befuddled. "What's going on here? Who put that there? How was that meant to work? What on Earth is this?" Sometimes things start to make sense #archaeology #castles #medieval
With #CelticKnot2024 wrapped up I'm off to another conference: #ChateauGaillard. I'll have to visit Waterford again, especially for the Medieval Museum, as there's more to see than I managed to fit in. But I managed to grab some snaps for #WikiLovesMonuments
In Farah Mustaklem's talk "Building Inter-linguistic Bridges" there's mention of the 2021 collaboration between Wikimedians of the Levant and @wikimediauk : 2021 Palestine-Wales Editathon https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/2021_Palestine-Wales_Editathon #CelticKnot2024
