If I was feeling extra spicy, I'd say that £-for-£ we probably get more educational benefit of it sitting on a server being used by all of two people in an obscure CS module than we do having a Vice Chancellor.

Got an email from a business analyst about my use of some open source software we have. Now, I don't use it. It's kinda rubbish (it's "very open-source-brackets-derogatory").

But, also, it's FOSS. There'll be a server cost to hosting it, sure, but I struggle to believe that this cost is anything but a rounding error on the heinous quantities of money undoubtedly being thrown at AI. And if the licence for the proprietary equivalent was yanked, I'd rather have it as an option even if it is shit.

Back in't day, when I was opening a 300 page thesis with something like 100 ChemDraw objects in it, on a netbook of all things, I addressed this problem by filling a document wallet with dry ice and putting it underneath.

This probably contributed to it fully will-not-even-power-on dying a year or so later.

Rendering some 4K videos while also trying to upload the completed ones, and Clippy just popped up to say "It looks like you're trying to turn this laptop into a frying pan. Would you also like me to launch Chrome to finish the job?"

More of the latter. Though many people think they haven't put up enough of a fight against it, the simple fact is that if it did come to a fight, one side is a charity organisation with a budget written largely in IOU post-it notes, and the other has enough dark money and Harry Potter income to sustain a court case until it straight up bankrupts the Guides.

We have the ampersand, &, as a short form for the conjunction "and".

I think we need an ampersbut as a short form for "but".

I propose the Tamil number 10 character, ௰ , because it looks like a butt. Lowercase omega, ω, would also do.

I'm not tech support, but I do have a key to the Cave of Wonders. So I got in early, set some people up with a better monitor, microphone and some camera options so 8 people didn't have to crowd around a laptop for a Teams interview...... and the interviewee didn't, in fact, turn up.

👍👍

@coldclimate

I think even the Americans wouldn't claim that as their own.

Thankfully, I'm outside fireball radius of any targets that would be hit with strategic weapons. That's a perfectly normal thing to regularly check after moving, right?
The sun is shining, kids are running around the park, someone has their window open blasting summery music in the background...... If movies have taught me nothing else, something very, very, very bad is about to happen.
