One of the first things the social democratic movement did was to create people's parks (folkparker). Where people could enjoy recreation, but also have meetings to educate themselves about the political analysis of social democracy. These were public spaces under their own control. Because city parks at the time didn't allow poor people access.
Another thing they did was to start their own newspapers. The internet of the day. Because (surprise) the newspapers wouldn't advocate their view
