New blogpost:

"Musings on 'digital sovereignty'"

I wanted to jot down some of my thoughts, before I forgot them.

The more I think about it, the less clear the whole thing seems...

Musings on 'digital sovereignty'

Some initial, probably flawed, thoughts on the notion of digital sovereignty

Chuffed to be heading to Fiji on Friday to assist with policy work for an organisation I very much value. Turmoil in the Middle East means flights are more of a challenge. Easy option was to fly via the US but I declined that option - no way I’m setting foot in the US under the current fascist admin

"The OSA, sex blogs, erotica, and Ofcom's approach to enforcement"

An update on how Ofcom has approached enforcement of the Part 5 "pornographic content" rules in the #OnlineSafetyAct.

The OSA, sex blogs, erotica, and Ofcom's approach to enforcement

2.5 years ago, I wrote about the Online Safety Act 2023's (anti-)pornographic content provisions.

Soon, the #DMA non-compliance investigation against Google will turn 2 years old. A decision is nowhere in sight. Together with 17 other associations, we've signed an open letter with a simple demand: enforce the DMA against Google's self-preferencing in search, now!

In just over 1 year Trump has:
•Bombed 8 countries
•Perpetuated genocide in Gaza
•Stolen Venezuela's oil
•Blocked all oil to Cuba, sending Cuba into catastrophic & deadly energy shortages
•Cut USAID, which has already killed 700K people
•Bombed Iran & spiked a global fuel prices
•Eased sanctions on Russian oil & given Russia hundreds of millions

Meanwhile at home groceries are more expensive, unemployment is rising, manufacturing is collapsing, & democracy is in shambles.

Are we great yet?🧐

FYI: EU publishes 100+ responses on rules that could reshape big tech ad targeting: The European Commission and EDPB published over 100 public submissions on draft DMA-GDPR guidelines that constrain how Alphabet, Apple, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft handle consent for personalized ads and data access. Final rules expected in 2026. https://ppc.land/eu-publishes-100-responses-on-rules-that-could-reshape-big-tech-ad-targeting/ #BigTech #AdTargeting #GDPR #Privacy #DigitalMarketing

Semi-seriously, I propose a moratorium on advocacy for online safety by design until its proponents have figured out what, concretely, it does and (perhaps more importantly) does not mean. Let’s face it, if it includes automated content filtering is it really anything more than an empty slogan? 3/4
