Retired - Catching up after 35 years out of geology. Caledonides, mylonites, migmatites, metamorphism & pseudotachylite. Arctic Norway, Scotland & Finland.

A #FridayFold from the west coast of the #IsleofLewis.

The dark mafic #OuterHebrides dykes were intruded into the #Lewisian gneiss. The original cross cutting relationship has been brought into near concordance during subsequent #Laxfordian deformation which also generated these folds.

Day 1 of the #30DayMapChallenge is point data! I’ve made a webmap showing the locations of itineraries as laid out in the Geological Memoir of Mull, first published in 1924. The localities are as relevant today as they were 100 years ago!

The webmap is based on the map (shown below) I put together for @geologymull and @FaithfullJohn for their fantastic evening that celebrated the centenary of the memoir’s publication in September.

Mull Memoir Itinerary Locations

Wooo! Look what's happening in Bunessan next Friday (1st November): a repeat of our #ScottishGeologyFestival talk in Tobermory, this time 55 miles away in the Ross of Mull. #Mull #Geology

I believe Mullite is a constituent mineral in Porcellanite - I posted this on Twitter a couple of years ago:-
"Saw a programme about polished axe heads, made from porcellanite, found in 2 localities in Co. Antrim. The variety of porcellanite is a hornfelsed lateritic soil, between Palaeogene basalt lavas.
Have you ever come across this rock type in Scotland, e.g. Skye or

#FridayFold in #Archaean amphibolites seen on the west coast of the #IsleofLewis.
Tiger stipe camouflage isn't really effective on the west coast of the #IsleofLewis👀
Compositional (rhythmic?) banding is preserved locally within an occurrence of #Lewisian "Older Basic Suite" meta-basics/ultrabasics.
#Archaean
@FaithfullJohn Ah ha, I think that solves a mystery. Whilst out and about looking at the wonderful Lewisian I have frequently encountered black circles and disks, (photo attached).
I presume when the algae dies it blackens. This might also explain the so called "oil staining" (a term much used by the giants of OH Lewisian exploration in the 60s and 70s), which can obscure large areas of coastal exposure.
Looks like another fine Hebridean morning🌄. Looking east across Broad Bay to Point.
A week ago we were exploring the mainland mountains silhouetted on the horizon😍
