Community Associate
We are looking for
The Open Home Foundation is looking for a Community Associate based in Europe to join our Community Department.
This is the job for someone who lives and breathes community. Someone who sees a great story and immediately wants to tell it. Someone who gets genuine satisfaction from sending the perfect piece of swag to someone who just made their first contribution. Someone who thinks "how do we make this person feel like they belong here?" and then actually does something about it.
Together with the Community Manager and the broader Community Department, you will help to bring the Open Home communities to life, online, at events and everywhere in between. You will help run our social media presence (specially our Discord!), support conferences and meetups, coordinate swag, produce online events, and most importantly, find and tell the stories that make this community so special.
What you are going to do
- Community Storytelling: Write engaging community content by finding, developing, and telling the stories that bring our community to life (contributor spotlights, project showcases, "how I got started" features). Help create a recognisable community voice across the board.
- Discord and Community Connection: Be an active, genuine daily presence in our Discord server (welcome new members, answer questions, plans events such as AMAs or watch parties, spot content that can be turned into content/community highlights and work with moderators to help maintain a healthy, welcoming server environment that reflects our values).
- Social Media: In coordination with the Digital Marketing Manager, manage and grow our social media presence across key platforms, keeping content consistent, engaging, and genuinely reflective of who we are - not just posts to fill a calendar but content that sparks real conversation.
- Events and Conferences: Support the Events Manager in delivering conferences, community meetups, and our presence at industry events like IFA, including the practical aspects (logistics, communication, platform setup, promotions and recaps). This will involve logistics support for both online and in-person events, including travel
- Swag and Recognition: Support our contributor recognition programme, help develop new swag ideas that people actually want then help the Community Department make sure the right things get to the right people at the right time.
- Video (Bonus Points): Showcase community videos, event recaps, social reels, tutorial content, there is no shortage of things to make.
What you need to have
Experience
- 2 to 3 years of experience in a community, social media, content, or communications role, or something else that has genuinely prepared you for this.
- Demonstrable experience managing social media accounts with real engagement, not just follower counts.
- Hands-on experience with Discord, whether managing a server, moderating channels, building community, or just being deeply embedded in one.
- Some experience with events, whether that is helping organise them, running them, or just being the person who always ends up making things work on the day.
- Experience keeping things organised enough to keep multiple things moving at once without dropping the ball, but relaxed enough to roll with it when things change.
- Video editing experience is a genuine plus.
- Professional Fluency in English: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- European Residency: You must be currently based and eligible to work within Europe.
It would be great if you also have
- Experience working in or with open source, tech, or community-driven organisations.
- A passion for smart homes and automation.
- Experience as a Home Assistant user.
