In 2008, on a warm spring day in Portland, a young black man (who was challenging the establishment Democratic presidential candidate) drew 80,000 people to an outdoor rally. The media took notice and began to treat the Dem campaign as a 2-person race. While Obama's presidency turned out to be a mixed bag (in part because of an unwavering belief that Republicans would partner with him in good faith), it was infinitely better than the horror show we are experiencing today.
