The FOSS4G Observatory (ex-OSS4gEO), is a 2- year activity funded by ESA through the permanently open call Future EO-1: EO Science for Society and carried out by Terrasigna. It is part of a wider ESA initiative to actively support and contribute to the open source community and it is intended as a seed action to better understand, represent and harvest the geospatial open source ecosystem.

πŸ“’ @osgeo has announced its openness to a new type of collaboration: the Ambassador.
The ambassador is a πŸ‘€ that supports the foundation to ⬆️ its πŸ’° through fundraising. The role is paramount, as #FOSS does not have a πŸ“£ πŸ“Έ πŸ›οΈ . Given its overwhelming importance to the entire ecosystem, one thinks that the support comes naturally. It is not so, thus constant efforts to secure longterm financial sustainability must be made. If this could be you, don't hesitate! πŸ‘‰ https://www.osgeo.org/foundation-news/osgeo-ambassador-programme-call-for-participation/

πŸ“š Haven’t discovered our online materials yet? For example, you can learn what #opensource is and why it matters in Topic 1 from the FOSS4G Observatory Courses.

Topic 1 - Inside the World of Geospatial Open Source and Its Educational Initiative explores:
βš™οΈ What #geospatial #opensource software is
πŸ‘₯ Why it matters for developers, users & decision-makers
πŸ“š How #education helps grow the #community

It is admirable to observ how the #FOSS way value&the πŸ’ͺ of building πŸ’» solutions following the #FOSS principles is gaining momentum within 🌍 organisations. In 2025, πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡³ UN officially πŸš€ the Open Source United, a UN-wide initiative to coordinate and scaleπŸ“ˆ open source efforts across its entire system. This week, the United Portal πŸš€ πŸ‘‰ https://opensource.un.org/en. When it comes to geospatial, we can only encourage πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡³ to blend in the already mature #FOSS4G ecosystem as can be easily seen in the @OSS4gEO
#FOSS is expensive πŸ’Έ ... when you don't do it right. According to one of the latest reportsπŸ“ of the @linuxfoundation the #ROI for companies that contribute back to the #FOSS projects they depend on is between 2-5X, while for the ones passively consuming (and forking privately) it actually turns into technical debt on the medium-long term. Check out the report and the data πŸ“š it relies on πŸ‘‰ https://www.linuxfoundation.org/research/contribution-roi?hsLang=en

The FOSS4G conferences are among the most awaited geospatial events of the year. Everything, from moving from ⛩️ to πŸ›οΈ , to the✨ variety that each LOC instills in their conference, to the excitement of meeting geospatial gurus, make people 🌍 flock to these FOSS4Gs. But maybe one of the coolest is the opportunity to have your say regarding the program! Respecting total anonymity of the voter and of the authors, one can vote what she would like to see. πŸ—³οΈ Choose the @foss4geurope workshops! πŸ‘‡
