Molecular and cellular biologist with research interest in aneuploidy field. Like chromosome segregation and endomembranes. @roylelab
I loved visiting the ‘Invisible You. The Human Microbiome’ exhibition earlier this week - an unexpected find at the Eden Project! I’ve never seen our bacterial workhorse, E.coli, represented in such a beautiful way as in the ‘Cut Microbe’ by Rogan Brown. I’ll certainly be feeling more inspired when I do the transformations + midi-preps I have planned for when I return to the lab tomorrow! Here is a video from Mircobiology Soc about the project: https://youtu.be/6i54njFhshs?si=g4cdMRObwG1RwVpA

There were other cool pieces at the ‘Invisible You’ exhibition, referencing the idea that our bodies form an ecosystem with our microbiome, such as these false-coloured photos of the microorgansisms cultured from people’s belly buttons and the ‘living artwork’ created from an agar cast from the artist’s face, spiked with bacteria from her skin and left to grow. #microbiology #ScienceArt #outreach
There was also this beautiful depiction of lytic bacteriophages escaping from their bacterial host. Years ago, reading that there are pathogens that attack our pathogens was one of the things that inspired me to study biology at university, to explore the inter-relationships between organisms at different scales. I’m sure the ‘Invisible You’ exhibition will spark the curiosity of many more young people about the workings of the living world ✨📚🤓🧑‍🔬 #microbiology #ScienceArt #outreach

A biologist’s guide to planning and performing quantitative bioimaging experiments

As bioimaging has moved from an observational method to a quantitative one, additional considerations are needed to carry out this work in a rigorous and reproducible manner. This Essay provides a navigational guide for biologists new to quantitative bioimaging, with recommendations and pointers to open source resources.

Big congrats to Nuria Ferrandiz @NFerrandiz who has won the #WarwickUni Medical School SEM Faculty Research Prize for her @JCellBiol paper 🎉

Endomembranes promote chromosome missegregation by ensheathing misaligned chromosomes | Journal of Cell Biology | Rockefeller University Press

Ferrandiz et al. found that misaligned chromosomes, arising from errors in mitosis, can become “ensheathed” in endomembranes. Ensheathing biases chromosomes tow

@clathrin watch this space! More initiatives to support #ECR progression in #academia are in development. They stemmed from the success of the Ambassadors For Better Research Culture #internatiomalwomensday panel discussion and the passion of the participants to help with the retention and progression of ECRs in academia, particularly #womeninSTEM. The data featured in both events show that there is still lots of work to do 💪👩‍🔬🧗📈

We had a very interesting event here yesterday with two PIs (ex-@Warwick_CMCB postdocs) who shared their career stories.

At my Uni at least, ECRs have plenty of alt-ac career talks and advice, but very few talks from academics about how they achieved independence. OK, they interact with research-focussed academics every day, but they don’t get honest accounts like this very often.

Hello all, just a reminder that there is a #PostDoc #Vacancy with @roylelab which is closing today!

It’s a 1.5 year post on intracellular transport vesicle movement and molecular characterisation. Shorter contract due to the current postholder relocating to another country. Very cool project which we are all really excited about. Possibility of extension. Take a look:

LRT: 11th February is the UN's Women and Girls in Science Day. My superstar colleague Nuria @NFerrandiz went to a school in London yesterday to inspire young people about scientific research, teaching them about DNA extraction.
