If you have been out of work for a while, and are asked why by a company in a hiring process, here are my suggestions:
1) If itâs on their form for employment, donât apply. Every single company Iâve seen that wants explanations for any gaps in employment are shit places to work. Just donât.
2) If someone asks during an interview, tell them that you took time off to pursue personal projects and spend time with family, but now youâre ready for your next challenge and long-term home.
Firstly, no one needs to know why youâre looking or what happened at your last role as long as it wasnât illegal. Also, messaging this way coveys that you are in control of your career and you are looking to find the right place for you to contribute. Not that you are âdesperate OMG please hire me now.â
Itâs also the start of you actually taking control of your own narrative by setting ground rules. Itâs good for your mental health. Youâre where you are because you want to be and you can leave if you need to. Even if you donât have the funds, this is a way to build the perceived and actual value that can help lead to you getting those funds.
