This movie occupies a special place in my heart. In addition to it being one of the best monster movies ever made, it’s one of those movies that was shown on channel 11 on Thanksgiving morning along with Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young. I’d watch those three movies and then go deal with the stupid monkeys in my family. As a kid, this movie scared the shit out of me (it didn’t help that the poster for the movie showed Kong four times as tall as the Empire State Building). As an adult, it continues to enthrall. A

Cerebral sci-fi with a minimalist budget from the guy that eventually did...Warcraft. Still my favorite Sam Rockwell performance (close second being 3 Billboards) despite having a fake beard made from the remains of highway roadkill. The less you know going into this the better, but if you didn't actually see it in theaters in 2009 it was probably spoiled for you but it doesn't lose much of its power even if you know the second act turn. Leslie Bibb uses this movie as porn.

Seriously, aside from the earlier Toho Kaiju efforts this is the real deal and the template for Legendary’s Godzilla:King of the Monsters. Great direction, terrific story and action make this a compelling watch. My only complaint is that in this movie , as in other Showa films, the Japanese military has such bad aim. Loads of ordnance are fired but none seem to hit their target.
