So in 1978 or ‘79, my then-boyfriend and I got a marriage license and a few days later went to the courthouse to get married. But when we got there, we discovered the courthouse closed early on Fridays. Somehow, we never tried again. I never thought about it again. But a few years ago, I was googling myself, and we show up in the state’s official records as married. He went full Tea Party a while back.
We’re in our 60’s now - should I hit him up for a divorce and get half of everything?

If you’re a trans person living in an unsafe place, you might consider New Mexico. This Reddit post and comments is worth reading, but basically, NM has laws to protect you, and a “Live and let live” attitude. Even in the deep red pocket of the state I live in, no one harasses trans people.
