The Montana "cowboy artist," Charles Russell (1864-1926), who was a real cowboy at the end of the 19th century, was keenly aware of the plight of Native peoples under the white invasion. Here's two very powerful drawings that tell the story. Writing the alt-text for these really improved my appreciation of these simple images.
The Last of His Race (1899) &
Mothers Under the Skin (1900)
(Pen & ink on paper by CM Russell.)
