Kokabura is modern lighter version of traditional Japanese kaburaya.
Saint Gregory’s Day is often playfully called Slovenia’s version of Valentine’s Day. According to folk tradition, it’s said that on this day, the birds find their mates - a charming metaphor for love and courtship. And since Kokabura itself takes its name from a bird known for its strong bonds, what better day to celebrate love and togetherness?
Our version of kaburaya is smaller, as the name suggests - “ko” meaning “small.” We affectionately call it Kokabura, since the word sounds like “kookaburra” and evokes the bird’s distinctive, resonant call.
So, what is kaburaya?
Kaburaya (鏑矢) is a type of a traditional Japanese arrow, designed to make a loud piercing whistling sound when shot. Kabura is a hollow, turnip-shaped bulb, that varied in size and shape and was usually made from wood, bamboo or deer horn, installed at the tip of an arrow or ya.
Kokabura is our contemporary take on the kaburaya, drawing inspiration from its classic shape and design.

Traditionally, one of the purposes of kaburaya was also to ward off evil spirits. It is used in Shinto rituals around New Year’s celebrations. So, the beginning of the year is a perfect time to use kokabura in hope of good fortune and prosperous year ahead of us.
