RalphsCrenshaw Boulevard and Manchester Avenue, Inglewood, California - 1956Credit unknownAside from being one of the very few SoCal supermarket chains that has survived to the present day, Ralphs holds a special place in grocery store history. Along with others including Alpha Beta, King Kullen, and especially Piggly Wiggly, Ralphs helped usher in the era of self-service food shopping. It is also the oldest grocer west of the Mississippi River, with George and William Ralphs having opened their first store in 1873.Ralphs was first sold in 1968 to Federated Department Stores, a holding company that has now evolved into being called Macys, Inc. Federated seemed to be a good steward of Ralphs as it often got my business in the mid-1980's even though it was further away from me than other choices. My turn against Ralphs began in 1988 when Federated resisted an attempt by the hostile takeover specialist Campeau Corporation to gain control. Prices quickly rose, and quailty fell. Ralphs was ultimately sold to an investment group in 1992, and it then went through multiple hands until finally falling under the control of evil Kroger in 1998.

As an American, I hope that all Canadian citizens will do the wise thing today and vote to keep the economist as their prime minister. After all, it worked out well for the U.S.A. ๐

Wake Up Oil Co. - Road Map of Ohio - 1952Credit: Jon Roma (site defunct)The history of the Wake Up brand is more than a little complicated. It was introduced in 1937 by the J.A. Hogshire Oil Company in Indianapolis that was already known for its Criteria brand. After a history that branched over multiple owners, some at the same time, Wake Up's sole corporate "descendant" is now 7-Eleven under its Speedway brand.
