The excitement in my house on a Saturday night at 21:45: looking at old railway timetables from  - this example is from 1954.

In those days, fares were mileage-based at 1¾d per mile (approximately 27p in post decimalisation currency) with First Class being a 50% surcharge, coming in now at around 40p a mile. Note that a First Class ticket entitled you to travel in First: no complimentary service on board, no lounges, etc

That means a single ticket Third Class Crewe to London (exactly 158 miles) was 276½d (£1 7/1½ or £42.66 today) and in First Class 414¾d (£1 14/6¾ or £63.20 today)

The same fares today? £148.50 in Standard Class and £236.5 in First Class.

N.B. £1 was 240 (old) Pence, 20 Shillings to £1 and 12 (old) Pence to 1 Shilling. 1 old Penny was four farthings (so ¼ Penny).

£1 was often written £1/- with anything after the pound signifying the amount of shillings and pence - 1 pound 3 shillings and 11 pence being £1 3/11

So now on the West Coast Mainline we have speed restrictions for:

Class 350 Desiros for  : 110mph [177km/h]
Class 805/7 Evero for  : 115mph [185km/h]
Class 390 Pendolino [in tilt mode] for  : 125mph [200km/h]

Nothing like making things even more complicated...

Well this is a farce. Having not checked the schedule correctly, I [as Fdl] have dropped a clanger. Railhead Treatment Train 3S11 [Three Sierra One One] wants to go to Huddersfield via Penistone. This is fine, except for the fact that you cannot do so from platform 1.

The ARS [Automatic Routesetting] would send the train into platform 1 as per the schedule in the simulation. I didn't check the schedule, so manually routed the train into platform 1. It needs to depart from platform 2 instead.

I could send the train southbound to shunt there and crossover. But there's no guarantee that the train won't just continue towards Meadowhall.

So I just shut the simulation down, gave it up as a bad decision, ordered pizza and will go and do something else.
