Sysadmin for several decades and lifelong nerd with a long career history of projects that started with "Does anybody know how to...."

Now I'm basically a SaaS therapist. I facilitate and enable healthy communication between cloud platforms that have unresolvable differences and don't like talking to one another.

@SteveBellovin I remember reading a post 5-ish years ago about testing for line current and circuit loop 40+ years ago with some very rudimentary tools and math, but I don't remember the specifics and I honestly probably did not understand as much of it as I thought I did.

Is this so you could plug in a whole base unit and get electricity levels off of a specific loop segment via the phone base internals? Or things like line polarity/status?

@RickiTarr I grew up a right winger in a right wing household. My parents were blasting Rush Limbaugh from the late 80's onward. In the early 90s we moved from the semi-rural Midwest to a city with a population of a few hundred thousand. We were in one of the poorer suburbs.

That's when I started realizing that all this "Welfare Queen" stuff was utter nonsense and started questioning everything else I was being told.

That got me in trouble with Pastors when I would point out where we, as a church body, were blatantly violating scripture and they were doing worse than that by not calling it out themselves in their leadership role.

Then I turned 18 and quit going because it was clear they were complacent and the status quo was more important than what they professed to believe.

It took a long time to unravel all of the BS I was force-fed as a result of being home-schooled, and I'm still finding bits of casual bigotry that were sprinkled on my formulating brain, but I spent most of my 20's and 30's working within myself to locate the last vestiges of that outlook on life in order to rid myself of it and the more of my own indoctrination I dug up, the more liberal I became.

Now, in my late 40's, having spent most of the Clinton era thinking we were going to get better as a species and maybe start approaching the acceptance levels of Star Trek TNG, I find myself continually unable to understand how someone can maintain a bigoted mindset in an information age like this.

I guess paying attention to reality made me liberal. Looking at actions instead of just listening to words helped, too.

Robot or human?

@javierg @acb @cstross @bruces Portable colander for the picnic basket?

If I had a dollar for each of the times I've heard someone say a variation of "Well, we couldn't make things talk with all the $securityfeatures turned on, so we just opened it wide up and now it's working", I could take a pretty nice vacation.

While this is not at all surprising to me, (script kiddies gonna script kiddie) ideally, this would be headlining every nightly news out there.

Unprecedented Exposure of Federal Databases Pose Critical Risk to Every American and National Security

Over 150 government database servers—normally hidden behind layers of security—are now directly exposed to the Internet, leaving Americans' data vulnerable to cyberattacks.

@JessTheUnstill Wow, I took that problem solving exercise in a completely different direction initially with solutions that only cover the tops of the feet, leaving the soles free for floor contact, but now I'm ACTUALLY sitting here wondering how long a pair of heated spats would run on watch batteries and if I know anyone who's good enough at costuming locally to make them look like I have hobbit feet.

@alice If I get unfollowed should I just re-follow so your posts continue to show up in my feed?

I haven't filled anything out because at this low-energy point in time I'm just on the fedi to read.

@cstross I love that I can't tell by the wording of this desire of yours whether or not I'm about to experience reading this for myself (AA-759 just survived, despite the odds) because you simply state that you want to read it, not whether you've in fact written it yourself already or not. Chapter 16: Schwerpunkt, here I come.
@grumpybozo I actually got here via your sig on mailop. I haven't bothered with a profile or even any real posting until now because I'm more interested in reading than I am with interacting. Your point, however, is a good one.
