I blog about movies and stuff.

I saw Obsession the week it came out, and then I saw it again the following weekend -- and it was still just as good as the first time I saw it. Yeah, this is one of the great ones. Terrifying movie with a lot on its mind, and Inde Navarrette makes her character into one of the best monsters in modern horror cinema.

Review: Obsession (2026)

Obsession  (2026) Rated R for strong bloody violence, grisly imagery, sexual content, pervasive language, and brief graphic nudity

It's still early, but I think The Drama is gonna wind up as one of my favorite films of 2026 when all is said and done. It's at once a gut-bustingly hilarious "anti-rom-com" and a movie that will make you stand in front of a mirror for ten minutes thinking about it, all of it anchored by a great cast at the top of their game. Go see it.

I saw the new Faces of Death last night, and I imagine it's gonna stand the test of time as a modern horror classic. The filmmakers understood the assignment, taking the basic conceit of the original shockumentary, updating it for the age of LiveLeak and shock sites, and using it to tell a grim, nihilistic tale of the worst excesses of internet culture, all wrapped in one hell of a slasher flick.

Did a double feature on Saturday of Night of the Living Dead, both the original classic and the 1990 remake, thanks to The Spooky Picture Show screening the latter. The original is the better movie, but it was a lot closer than I expected, with the remake actually doing quite a few things better even if it felt a bit more sanitized. Either way, they're both great movies and great companions to one another.

Review Double Feature: Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Night of the Living Dead (1990)

It's zombie time! Another double feature, this time original vs. remake. In advance of the Spooky Picture Show's screening of the director's...

I really liked the first Ready or Not, and I really liked the second one, too. Bigger cast and more action, but still just as much fun, and I can imagine them making for a great double feature once the second one is out on video and streaming.

The Spooky Picture Show podcast screened Bordello of Blood at Cinema Salem this past Saturday, and I think I may have finally found my local substitute for Popcorn Frights back in Fort Lauderdale. Don't get me wrong, the movie itself was trash, but the discussion before and after it was very fun, especially when they started getting into the movie's wild production.

It's been too long since I wrote one of these...

Send Help proves two things: a) Sam Raimi's still got it as a horror filmmaker, and b) casting directors have been sleeping on Rachel McAdams and Dylan O'Brien for years. This was an incredibly fun survival thriller that just goes wild and has an absolute blast, and I was more than happy to go along for the ride. Definitely check it out.

Predator: Badlands leaves Dan Trachtenberg three-for-three with great Predator movies. The two leads were amazing, the action kicked ass, it had some great worldbuilding and subtext without it overpowering the movie, and it was amusing seeing how much gore they managed to get past the MPAA by pulling the old "they're robots and aliens, it doesn't count!" trick.

Predator: Badlands  (2025) Rated PG-13 for sequences of strong sci-fi violence

The fourth and final [REC] film was the perfect place to have ended this series. It feels like they were running out of ideas, cribbing notes from other zombie movies, and losing their grasp on what made this series unique, but it still hit the spot as just a fun zombie flick that felt like the ending of a Resident Evil game in the best way.

  [REC] 4: Apocalypse  ( [REC] 4: Apocalipsis ) (2014) Rated R for strong horror violence/gore, and language

The third [REC] movie unfortunately doesn't live up to the standard of the first two. It has its moments and it's not an altogether bad movie, but it tries to go a more fun and "awesome" tone and never really pulls it off. I only recommend it for series completionists and diehard zombie fans.
