Found my old Uplink CDs...
Long story short, I now have a Windows XP VM with nothing but Uplink, and I've lost a whole day to the game.

@catsalad I Am the Very Model of a Modern Cyber Specialist

I am the very model of a modern cyber specialist,
My posture is proactive and my mindset synergist,
I leverage blockchain paradigms resilient and immutable,
For threats that are, in practice, mostly quite disputable.

I’m zero-trust by principle, by strategy, by ritual,
Though flat networks persist beneath my slide deck quite habitual;
I champion quantum readiness, cryptography transitionable,
While SSH keys on our servers stay embarrassingly guessable.

I speak of AI governance, of ethics and alignment,
Of digital transformation in a cloud-first re-assignment;
I orchestrate compliance in a framework interoperable,
Yet patching legacy systems is declared economically implausible.

I circulate an SBOM with enthusiasm evangelical,
Though half the stack was compiled by interns quite mechanical;
I threat-model via workshops with sticky notes galactical,
But tracing actual packet loss I find impractical.

I quantify cyber maturity in gradients holographic,
With heatmaps operationally impressive and chromatic;
I benchmark risk velocity in dashboards most aesthetical,
While incident response remains distinctly hypothetical.

In short, in blockchain-quantum-zero-trust evangelistical,
In AI-driven thought leadership aggressively statistical,
In buzzword transformation visionary and fantastical,
I am the very model of a cyber strategist theatrical.

But when the logs erupt at 3 a.m. with evidence electrical,
I forward them to someone slightly more technical.

If you're in software, this is deeply worth reading and contemplating.

Carbon Dysphoria by @iris_meredith

Excerpt:
"software development relies heavily on collaboration, interpersonal skills and being able to communicate well: all stereotypically female traits that are, as they always were, vital to the production of good software. This leads to a contradiction in the social structure of software work, as while to be accepted as part of the tech community requires you to present and emote in very masculine ways, actually being good at the act of producing working software requires you to have personality traits that are considered unmasculine and that are in fact somewhat feminine."

And now the punchline: this depersonalisation, the weird relationship to their bodily existence, inability to enjoy things and an internal void that people constantly try and fill with what they're told they should want... all of these things are very similar to the experience of gender dysphoria.

Aaand that's it for #AdventOfCode 2025.

The last 3 days have been a _ride_. I hit the wall hard on Day 10 with the linear programming problem. So it might be time for me to either learn some math or learn to use Z3 properly. Day 11 also slammed me straight into a gap in my abilities. Muddled though a little better though. Tonight's tricky little problem was one I knew how to approach, but maybe not solve efficiently... and then the good /u/Topaz threw us a bone with the inputs, so I managed it within my 90 minute evening code block.

Once again I had lots of fun, learned some new things, and found glaring gaps in my skillset. Can't complain about any of that!

PiDP-1 s/n 056 checking in. There's still some finishing work (speaker foam, labels) to do, but she's up and running.

Borland TurboVision (the PC text mode windowing UI used in Turbo Pascal/C++) has been open-sourced and updated to work seamlessly on Linux and with Unicode:

https://github.com/magiblot/tvision

It’s all in C++, though if someone hasn’t wrapped it in bindings for Python/Rust/&c. yet, surely they will

GitHub - magiblot/tvision: A modern port of Turbo Vision 2.0, the classical framework for text-based user interfaces. Now cross-platform and with Unicode support.
