@mike And just a reminder: Monthly recurring donations add financial stability to your instance - having a reliable stream of income means instance admins can focus on providing service, and not fundraising.
#Server and #hosting costs are going through the roof for #instance #admins. If you like your instance, and want to see it continue to stick around, please consider #supporting your instance #financially if you're able to. #Fediverse #Sharkey #Pixelfed #Pleroma #Misskey #Iceshrimp #PeerTube #Friendica #Lemmy #WriteFreely

In the spirit of #MARCHintosh, it was fun to look back through photos of the Mac hosting company I founded and built 16 years ago.🧵

@MLE_online To me, this just underscores how wages haven’t kept up with inflation - and the gap…. That’s where billionaires are made.

If minimum wage kept up with inflation, a $20 drink wouldn’t cost several hours of work at minimum wage - it would cost 20 minutes worth of labour.

I keep seeing articles like this, about how people choosing to drink less is hurting bars and restaurants, and it's almost always framed as people, especially younger generations, don't like to drink.

They never seem to bring up the fact that a cocktail is like $20 now unless you go to a really divey dive bar. It's the same kind of reporting they on how no one goes to the movies anymore. It's always about changing habits, and never that movie tickets just cost a lot now.

Dinner and No Drinks: Restaurants Are Struggling as Americans Drink Less

Traditionally a reliable revenue stream for restaurants, alcoholic drinks are down markedly — and the bottom line is, too.

@ai6yr And the follow up question - does it rise faster if you heat up the gas first? Releasing the gas from a pressurized container drops the temperature… could you heat the gas by forcing it through hot oil first, and then using the warm helium to inflate the balloon?

@RichRARobi Actually did some more digging tonight - I found a Thunderbolt 2 to FW800 adapter among my box of FireWire cables. Which led me to finding a MacBookPro with TB2 port… which *also* has a FW800 port.

I think I might be on to something…

@kalleboo has done it again with a wonderful new app for #marchintosh: an interactive click-and-paint canvas.

It's only been up for 24 hours, and already lots of people have made their mark.

Who knows how much fun you can have with pixel painting on a vintage Mac after you've had a few pints of Guinness today? Happy St. Patrick's Day! 🍀 🍻

To play with the MARCHintosh Canvas, get yourself onto #GlobalTalk, connect to the BaroNet zone, go to the "landisk" share, and look for it in the #MARCHintosh #GlobalTalk folder.

@mwl I learned about database page size == file system block size == storage hardware block size alignment at a conference nearly 20 years ago, and not only did it help me make my existing systems faster, it taught me to look at a deeper level when designing systems.

I’m glad you’re covering this in the book!

@nixCraft So this is Meta’s response to ad blockers and JavaScript blockers and cookie blockers and privacy-centric browsers…

Cut through all the bullshit and get directly to your government-issued identification to extract your demographics (if not your full and real identity)… so they can increase the cost of ads and target you as an individual - not just a profile of interests.
