Midwinter froze the river to the sky,
a wheel of silver. Spring is far behind;
the westron wind returns but leaves us cold.
The dried-out laurel leaves are blown around,
like whispering tongues that pass dead metaphors
to a world of wished-for correspondences
by now discredited, epiphanies
revealed too soon, already busted bets,
a world of close connections monetised.
Shall nobody arise to make afresh
the associations thus disorganised?
