Allowable Diversions.

On the face of it, it may be kind of weird for a vegan like me to like an article about hunting but anyone who brings in Thomas Clarkson to talk about Quaker cultural values is someone I'll love to talk with. https://www.friendsjournal.org/allowable-diversions/ #Quaker

Allowable Diversions

A Friend explores the morality of hunting.

In which Dan and Tom finally get to do that episode focusing on Jean Shepherd. Listen as they go on about the man behind the story behind the movie that some folks will sit and watch for 24 hours. From creeping meatballism to the Red Ryder BB Gun to the myth of a man making myths. Enjoy.

Was there a 1950s radio show that covered ufos, Venusian diplomats, spaceship builders, and was frequented by sf authors of the day? Did JHVA-1 infiltrate the transmission? Did it really happen? Find out...

When I began to realize how deeply I, a good liberal, held my unconscious racism, I was truly shocked.

But once I made it a priority, finding and deactivating the big chunks of that stuff was pretty easy. I probably won't ever be *done,* but it is a pleasure to deprogram myself.

And the work is something I'm very proud of. I used to fear it would destroy me somehow, but it just set me free.

Watch Nina Simone’s Flawless Tribute to Johann Sebastian Bach on The Ed Sullivan Show (1960)

Some 80 years ago, in a small North Carolina town, Eunice Waymon, a musically gifted, nine-year-old black girl, began taking piano lessons in the home of an exacting Englishwoman named Muriel Mazzanovich.

Currently listening to Rodriguez's seminal album, Cold Fact. Re-released by Light in the Attic nearly 40 years after the fact, it's brilliance was finally recognized (outside of South Africa).

81 and still gone too soon...

To honor Robbie Robertson's life, and to mark his recent demise, I can think of no better words than these, that I wrote some little time ago, and published at the Lexicon of Song: https://lexiconofsong.org/the-weight.html.

The Weight | Lexicon of Song

An Essay on the song "The Weight" by Robbie Robertson

it seems clear that the book of Levon
(& there need be no favorites, Levon was a force of nature & to be revered)
turned many of us against Robbie.

I do recall reading Robbie's book & thinking...
"Oh."
Possibly there were more sides to this.

& when you phrase it
(as someone more-or-less did)

that we took the word of the white dude, the man's man from Arkansas,
& assumed the slim indigenous androgynous Canadian was in the wrong...

well,
we got fooled again.
