She/her/they/them. I love language, geeky stuff, puns, cats, big ideas, the arts, the law, food, science and nature.

Watching networks re-establishing themselves on Mastodon.

The sharper journalists are already over here and more arrive by the hour. Halifax Twitter is re-forming quickly here thanks to @halifaxsocial.ca 's friendly on-ramp.

What I'm not seeing are bots, trolls or hostility. Mastodon's simply a more mellow environment where folks seem to have less to prove.

It's like we /did/ that all already. We don't need to replay it here.

You know, I'm actually feeling hopeful about something for once.

I guess the upside of impulsively having a cup of coffee's worth of caffeine last night and messing up my shoulder doing martial arts is that I am wide awake to see the #lunareclipse in 45 minutes.

@coogie

I miss quote-tooting already.

Going to get up just a little earlier than normal tomorrow to watch the #lunareclipse2022 (6.16am for #Halifax)

Not sure what to make of the fact that creating a "loyalty" aspect for sims inadvertently turned otherwise peaceable sims into big jerks. I feel like there's a message in it, though. Maybe a sign of our times. 😂

Someone says ”if you can use email, you already know how to use Mastodon”.. can we just not, ok? 😂
Make sure to understand that direct messages on Mastodon are not necessarily private. If you mention some Y else in a "direct message" to X, they will also get that! Surprise. https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/posting/

Can't see exactly on the phone, but we've surpassed 100 users. I don't expect them all to be active, or even stick around, but I honestly didn't think we'd hit this mark for months, if at all. Hopefully we can get a critical mass of active users posting to make it self sustaining!

For new and old users alike, just wanted to praise and recommend the practice of adding alt text for image posts:
- It helps more people understand and enjoy your posts!
- It makes stuff you've posted or favorited easier to find. (ie search includes alt text)
- You get a luxurious 1500 characters to work with.
- It's always been part of the web, but Mastodon was the first social media site I've seen add it - twitter eventually did, and Cohost had it within a few weeks of launch.
- Always do it!
