Great episode of Science Vs for the scientist runners out there. (Yes, I did listen to this while running)

Paying peer reviewers works! The @Co_Biologists journal Biology Open scaled up their "Fast and Fair" trial where they paid peer reviewers ยฃ220 per on-time quality review. One year on and time to first decision is now 5.5 working days (down from 37.7 days). This preprint reports their findings.

The new Microcosm is out! It was great to work on this again with @ASMicrobiology and interview microbiologists doing such fascinating work. For my article "Bringing Microbial Dark Matter Into the Light," I got to talk to scientists who study microbes in Antarctica, in hot springs, and within the deep subsurface of the earth (including one that takes thousands of years to double)!

(my article requires member log-in, but others in the issue can be accessed by anyone)

When I heard of how iota-carrageenan nasal sprays can shorten duration of colds, I had to check out the science behind it. The research is relatively new and I found just 31 papers on PubMed. Shorter, milder colds? Iota-carrageenan cuts length and severity of upper respiratory infection symptoms

A few weeks ago, I ended up getting a cold that lasted forever. Iโ€™m talking about weeks of coughing, nasal congestion, and multiple boxes of tissues. At the same time, someone in my writers&#โ€ฆ

Love that GenScript is advertising protein expression kits and their gene synthesis service on the train. I guess there are enough of us biology nerds taking the train to work here. ๐Ÿ˜‚
