Here are a couple of photos I took yesterday at an art exhibition. The works were created by Anastasia Hartikainen, known by her artist name Usvatar. Small exhibitions always feel somehow more intimate than visiting large museums. This time, the exhibition space was a small café that also sells books, located in the old town of Turku.

Here’s a photo I took today of a timber transport at the ferry dock. The picture was captured on Houtskari Island, which is part of the world’s largest archipelago by the number of islands. Despite their beauty, even these northern islands are not spared from clear-cutting and the exploitation of nature.

Ensi viikolla keskustellaan ilmastotoivosta!✨
Luontoliiton Helsingin ilmastoryhmä järjestää tiistaina 17.3 Ilmastotoivon illan, jonka aikana mm. keskustellaan positiivista ilmastouutisista Oras Tynkkynen johdolla. Oman aktivoivan puheenvuoroni aikana tuon esiin näkökulmia ilmastopsykologiasta, jaan ajatuksiani ilmastotoivon merkityksestä ja käyn läpi erilaisia tapoja aktivoida rakentavaa toivoa ilmastokriisin keskellä. Tervetuloa kuulolle - nähdään Töölön kirjastolla tai etäyhteyden kautta!
Hakukoneiden kytkökset planeettamme elonkehään ja meihin itseemme ovat hyvin moninaiset. Kirjoitin asiasta katsauksen Media & Viestintä -lehden teemanumeroon Media/Maa. Katsauksessa tarkastellaan hakukoneiden suoria ja epäsuoria kytköksiä Maa-planeetan – ja erityisesti sen elonkehän – materiaalisuuksiin. Tarkastelun välineenä toimii Sy Taffelin (2019) teoksessaan Digital Media Ecologies: Entanglements of Content, Code and Hardware hahmottelema poliittisen mediaekologian lähestymistapa. Ekokriisien aiheuttamien haasteiden takia myös mediatutkimuksen on tärkeää huomioida hakukoneiden kaltaisten teknologioiden vaikutuksia ympäröivään maailmaan. Ilmastonmuutoksen myötä hiilidioksidipäästöt ovat usein ympäristöseikat huomioivan keskustelun keskiössä, mutta poliittisen mediaekologian kaltaisten lähestymistapojen avulla aiheen käsittelyä on mahdollisuus laajentaa uusille urille.
