A spaceship landed in the park. An alien emerged, holding a slate in a tendril.

"Greetings Earthlings," they read. "We have come to learn about this wondrous thing you call l..."

They paused, oculating the slate.

"Love?" a passing dogwalker suggested.

"Libraries! Do they exist?"

Hey @jerry I just recently had a look at the podcast resources page and wow that is broken

An observation on UI/UX.

Oversimplification does not equate to ease of use for some people. Take for instance the cheap Air Fryer my MIL bought. Now admittedly, she's in her '80s, but the fancy light up touch controls with presets meant she could not work out what to press to do cook what she intended. One reason was the cookbook she had (specific to air fryers) talked about setting temperatures, and while this one *can* do it, it's not obvious and the "manual" is maybe 5 pages long and written in tiny text.

Now octogenarians probably aren't the prime market segment for modern kitchen appliances, but some consideration needs to be made for older folk adopting newer tech. I guess the only advice I can offer for anyone designing this stuff is that old people tend to be set in their ways, so look to the past on how similar things worked and try to couch your documentation or UI in those terms.

Mine runs on an uberspace too

ThisÂč popped into my feed again, and I want to add something else: being a bit shit at stuff and doing it anyway is specifically a radical, anti-capitalist act. âœŠđŸ» An underlying reason you want to do things well is because you’ve internalised the lesson that stuff only has value if it literally has economic value – if you can sell it.

Post your wonky drawings. Throw an ungainly pot. Make sub-par dinners. You’re literally smashing the system. ♄

OpenAI threatening to leave the EU if they pass legislation requiring them to list their data sources because:
"In addition to the possible business threat, forcing OpenAI to identify its use of copyrighted data would expose the company to potential lawsuits. Generative AI systems like ChatGPT and DALL-E are trained using large amounts of data scraped from the web, much of it copyright protected. When companies disclose these data sources it leaves them open to legal challenges."

Like every other boom tech company, it's just doing labor crimes and theft and claiming you're actually too innovative to be regulated, God.

OpenAI says it could ‘cease operating’ in the EU if it can’t comply with future regulation

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has warned that the company could pull its services from the EU if it finds upcoming regulations too onerous. The EU AI Act is currently being finalized by lawmakers and should become law next year.
