This is probably a question for @chemjobber , but does anyone know the per-capita number of chem PhDs? I have a researcher from the small Caribbean island of Dominica who is headed off to a doctoral program and I think it’s possible he’ll be the first from the island to do so

I love the question my youngest just texted me!

"Why do we use the gas constant if these reactions can happen with any substance and not involve gasses at all?"

It was accompanied by a screenshot relating equilibrium to Gibbs free energy, all including R. I love the curiosity and the attention to detail. Plus I then got to write about Boltzmann and the difference between heat and temperature. I expect it will come up in our next walk too. Such fun to be able to talk about these ideas.

Hosted Dr. Taylor Uekert, an expert in lifecycle assessment (LCA), last week. So many great things from the visit, but the most succinct and immediately actionable for me is that for her to consider GHG assessments significant, there needs to be at least a 20% difference whereas for toxicology it needs to be two orders of magnitude. #LCA #GHG #climate #environment
