🇫🇴 Faroese Word of the Day #wordoftheday

#Faroese word for shell - #skel - sounds the same as in #English as both comes from Proto-Germanic *skaljō.

There are quite a few idioms related to #shells in Faroese:

* "sum skeljar" - said of bone-dry hay - literally means "like #shells"
*"liggja í skeljum" (lie in shells) is used when referring to something among other bits and pieces

#Germany has for centuries been a conglomerate of many tribes. The neighbour tribe of Alemannen gave the #French name Allemagne.

#Polish name #Niemcy comes from *němьcь - speechless - since German is not mutually intelligible with #Slavic languages.

#Faroese word for #Germany is #Týskland. It derives from Old High German work #diutisc (of or pertaining to the people or tribe). In #OldNorse it became þýðskr/þjóðskr and later formed #Tyskland in Scandinavian languages.

The village of #Svínoy (pop. 31) lies in fertile lowland isthmus surrounded by mountainous areas. Its name means Swine (or Pig) Island.

The island is relatively flat. One can follow the “Eystur í Hagan” road to enjoy the view of #Fugloy

#Gekkur is a televised #bingo game with spinning wheel. Participants buy game cards at a local store (40 DKK) and follow along live on Kringvarp Føroya Tuesday evenings.

If they win, they call in to the show and enter a series of complicated bonus rounds...

Over the past 25+ years over 4200 lucky players won 120mm DKK in #Gekkur.

The village name in #Faroese derives from the man’s name #Oyvindur.

The #church, a traditional wooden church with a #turf roof, was built in 1838.

At the beach you can see two rocking stones called #Rinkusteinar.

#Funningsfjørður (pop. 59) is located at the bottom of an inlet. It's an outlying village from #Elduvík found in 1832 as #niðursetubygd.

Its name comes from the village of #Funningur - the noun #finningur means #find. Tradition says that the first viking on the #FaroeIslands, #Grímur Kamban, settled there.

The company #OceanRainforest is experimenting with #seaweed cultivation in the fjord, and at the port, up to 4k pallets are produced daily.

#Hestur (pop. 15) is a #Faroese village on the island of Hestur. Its name refers to the ridge of the #island which resembles the back of a #horse - #hestur in #Faroese.

In 1919 a fishing accident resulted in the deaths of one-third of #Hestur's men. Following that accident and to fight the depopulation of the village a swimming #pool was built - it was opened in 1983.

The local #post office opens just once a week for only 90 minutes.
