I took a
#microCT scan of an oak gall I found while waiting for the bus today. It had 4 emergence holes so I assumed all of the gall wasps had already emerged, but there are still several inside! If you look closely you can see them moving in the radiographs. 68 min scan.
In honor of Spooky Seasonπ I CT scanned a mummified bat that one of our office support specialists found inside the ceiling here at Beckman today. π¦
CT scanned a cocklebur seed for fun recently. I couldn't figure out why the center of the reconstructed scan was full of so many artifacts, until I looked at the raw radiographs... π
Any followers know what type of larvae live inside cocklebur seeds?
I acquired some anatomically incorrect insect skeletons to decorate the microCT room at BeckmanInst for Spooky Season πππ»
Last week I tried putting a live jumping bean in one of our CT scanners. Unfortunately the larvae inside didn't want to hold still for a fast scan (18 sec), but the raw radiographs still make for a cool visual π(bean is still alive and kicking as of this morning)
Looks like fall migration is starting up! This little fella (Blackburnian warbler βοΈ?) was fortunate enough to survive a strike against one of Beckman's windows this morning. They flew off into a nearby tree, hopefully they make a full recovery π€
