A few days left to apply for the #DisabledInSTEM Mentorship Program
Mentee form: https://forms.gle/um5DvYnBi3tnMMRg6
Mentor form: https://forms.gle/BvaxnQm8uhUR7aLz8
Applications due December 5th!
Thank you for your interest in becoming a mentee. This marks the sixth year of the program, and we are deeply grateful for the continued support from our community. The program features mentoring pods, which are small groups designed to facilitate meaningful interactions between mentees and mentors. The goal is to support disabled individuals in STEM by guiding essential soft skills such as interviewing, writing personal statements, networking, and navigating academic or professional environments. This opportunity is open to individuals who identify as disabled and are pursuing a STEM field. Mentors are volunteers who are committed to supporting the success of disabled individuals in STEM. While some mentors may also identify as disabled, others are dedicated allies. Please note that we cannot guarantee a mentor in your specific field, but the program is designed to foster valuable learning and connections across disciplines. Mentors may have limited availability throughout the year due to their volunteer status. Mentoring pods are expected to meet monthly and collaboratively set goals and tasks. These may include reading assignments, attending conferences, conducting informational interviews, or other activities tailored to the needs and interests of the pod members. Each pod is encouraged to customize its experience to best support its participants. Matches will be made in January and communicated via email. Participants will also be invited to join our Slack workspace to connect with others in the program. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected] Applications due December 5th, 2025 Learn more about the program: Mentee Information Document Program featured in Nature Reviews Materials: Read the article Recognized by New England Biolabs

I’m very grateful to @cenmag for dedicating this year’s Trailblazers issue to disabled scientists.
Representation matters, and so does giving grad students the chance to contribute to these stories.
Honored to be part of this powerful collection.

Check out this recent @NatureEcoEvo interview with Alyssa Paparella to see the insights of starting this platform while being a graduate student!
DisabledInSTEM is a platform that offers support, mentorship opportunities and shared resources for persons who are navigating science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields with disabilities. We talked to Alyssa Paparella, a PhD candidate at the Baylor College of Medicine, Howard Hughes Medical Institute 2023 Gilliam Fellow, and founder of DisabledInSTEM, about her background and experiences with advocacy in academia.

Hello all! I'm organizing a Secret Santa for the DisabledInSTEM community (and allies if they're interested in participating!). With the pandemic, many disabled individuals have been unable to leave their homes, which is especially difficult during the holiday season. Given everything going on in the world, many are feeling isolated. In order to brighten up everyone's season, I'm organizing this Secret Santa Gift Exchange for the third year! Even if this only brightens a few people's holiday season, it's worth it! How it works: Fill out this form with your information, which MUST include an Amazon wishlist. I'm using Amazon wishlist so each person does not need to disclose their address, but it can be shipped directly to them. On your Amazon list, please have a few items (~$25) so that your Secret Santa can pick either one item around ~$25 or multiple items that end up close to that price. Your Secret Santa will select the item(s) and it will be shipped to you! In exchange, you will be matched with another person and do the same thing for them! This way everyone gets a nice little treat that they would like during the holiday season and able to spread the joy! My goal is to send matches out early December so that people can get a gift before the end of the year, but it depends on how many people are interested. If you have any questions, reach out to me via DM @DisabledSTEM on Twitter/X or [email protected] Disclosure: I cannot ensure everyone will send an item as this is based on an honor system. Please be willing to send someone a gift in order to participate.
