First person – Valentina Zuco

ABSTRACT. First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Disease Models & Mechanisms, helping researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Valentina Zuco is first author on β€˜ Effects of irinotecan plus trabectedin on a desmoplastic small round cell tumor patient-derived xenograft’, published in DMM. Valentina is a scientist in the lab of Nadia Zaffaroni at Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Tumori, Milan, Italy, investigating patient-derived tumor models to identify new therapeutic strategies for patients with rare cancers to be translated into clinical trials.

A trip to Ireland for human organoid engineering – a Travelling Fellowship story from Disease Models & Mechanisms

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) represent a growing challenge in modern medicine and may give rise to impaired cognition, communication, and psychomotor skills. It is therefore very important that more sophisticated in vitro models are created to reveal the complexities of these disorders. Nore Van Loon, a PhD student from the University of Ghent, used a Travelling[...] Read More

DMM2023: Infectious Diseases Through an Evolutionary Lens

Infectious Diseases Through an Evolutionary Lens Infectious diseases have exerted strong selective evolutionary pressure on humans and other hosts throughout history. There is growing appreciation of the use of evolutionary analyses to gain insight into the critical interactions between pathogen and host that lead to disease, tolerance or resolution for SARS-CoV-2, tuberculosis, HIV, malaria and[...] Read More
