“The bridge to nowhere: Why your ‘Target Architecture' won’t ever deliver” From Dafydd Vaughan: https://dafyddvaughan.uk/blog/2025/the-bridge-to-nowhere-why-your-target-architecture-wont-ever-deliver/ #GCdigital
The bridge to nowhere: Why your ‘Target Architecture' won’t ever deliver

Stop funding fictional target architecture blueprints and start funding empowered, long-lived teams. The traditional, rigid approach is too slow for the age of AI and will never solve your real-world legacy tech problems. It’s time to trade the fiction for empowered teams and clear principles.

Good read, with lots of insights and a practical way forward!

One of my fave ideas:
‘ … managing technology isn’t like building a bridge. It’s like gardening. You don’t “finish” it. It requires constant tending, pruning, and adaptation to a changing environment.’

Happy Persons Day! Here’s my annual reminder of the complicated legal and moral legacy of the Famous 5 - a video I shot during the “high COVID” times of 2020. (Hence the outdoor mask and the very uncut hair.) But I don’t think the message is at all out of date. https://youtu.be/a_HhQP3HoxU?si=3SxCTSwsCH6_O9ly #SenateofCanada #PersonsDay #Famous5 #Alberta #FamousFive #Vriend #LGBQT

On this day in 1893, silent superstar Lillian Gish was born in Springfield, Ohio. In 1988, I wrote to her asking if silent films had actual dialogue written out in the scripts or if there was just a general description of what was being said. This was her remarkable reply.

I think about this “How to Work Better” mural at least once a week. (“DO ONE THING AT A TIME” and “ACCEPT CHANGE AS INEVITABLE”) https://www.guggenheim.org/articles/checklist/how-to-work-better-making-a-mural-on-houston-street

I first read the phrase ‘Fall in love with the problem, not with a solution’ about 10 years ago, on Twitter.

And as I often think about clear communication (a.k.a. clear writing, modern plain language), it made me wonder what ‘falling in love with the problem’ would look like in that context. That led to intriguing questions… and intriguing bits of answers, too!

You’ll find some of my thoughts in this post:

I have spent the last six months serving on the University of Waterloo's Task Force on Free Expression. This was many, many hours of work. The President has released our report. You can find it here (pdf): https://uwaterloo.ca/freedom-of-expression/sites/default/files/uploads/documents/foe-tf-report-20240608final5-final-ua33.pdf
