I did a series of blurbs on the first 10 Akira Kurosawa films that I watched last week. I'm not going to cross post all that here, but check me out on Facebook or Instagram if you're interested.
Annoyed to find some of the Kurosawa films on Filmbox have been edited to hide smoking. When tobacco touches a character’s mouth, it is blurred out. It's a remarkably distracting and pulls you out of the story.
In Scandal (1950), Toshiro Mifune smokes a pipe and loses his face. The Idiot (1951) is also censored. When and by whom? I've Googled, but found no discussion on this topic.
I'm not suggesting Filmbox is censoring smoking..so far I've found only two examples of this on their service.
