This apocalypse has way more than the usual number of horsemen.
Tired, poor, huddled mass, yearning to breathe freeReally, I just want to be alone. But I want you there in the screen so I'm not lonely.

Kiddo has been waiting FIVE HOURS for the washing machine to stop gagging on its own bubbles and throwing a "suds" error so she can get her sheets out of there. How much electricity is this nonsense using? When will it ever end? Why can't I bypass this and start over, and/or get the stuff out? (I have indeed tried unplugging it - twice.)
I want a washing machine without a computer in it! I understand Speed Queen is expensive but ticks this and all the other boxes.

#Mushrooms help remove #sewage and #EColi from Devon rivers

2 June 2026

"Mushrooms could be used to filter out harmful waste and sewage in rivers, after a trial showed a certain fungi can destroy a type of bacteria that is a risk to human health.

"The fungi, called turkey tail mushroom, was used in part of a river in Devon and managed to filter out 80% of E. coli bacteria during the trial.

"E. coli is a type of bacteria which can be harmless and shows up in the intestines of healthy people. But certain types of E. coli can really harmful - causing vomiting, fever and severe health problems.

"During the trial, bags of turkey tail mushrooms were stacked across a riverbed, filtering water through their roots, which are called mycelia.
"The mycelia acted like a sponge, catching the E. coli bacteria to prevent it going into the river.

"Water industry regulator Ofwat has given Anglian Water £1.5 million to use fungi to clean up rivers because the trial worked so well.

"In another trial in Lincolnshire, a similar barricade caught 83% of phosphorus and 35% of nitrogen from rainwater running off farmers' fields.

"Farmers spread these chemicals as fertilisers, but when they wash into watercourses they can cause thick algae to form, starving fish of oxygen."

I finished chores for the day and had a little dinner on the deck - strawberries, and coffee with Irish Cream. This bold little creature did not care about my presence, and continued to dig around in that leaf pile for its dinner (maple seeds, swept off the deck a few weeks ago). I wonder if chipmunk logic says "if you can't see it, it's not a threat," or was I really understood to be so unthreatening that it felt safe to turn its back to me?
It was a glorious day to be outside. Also, I like this big old gnarly tree trunk. My best guess is that this silver maple was planted when the house was built, in 1952.
A view from the deck. Three kinds of goldenrod, two kinds of sedge, wood mint, monarda, columbine, black raspberry, pokeberry, plenty of unidentifieds, and a partridge in a pear tree. Just kidding, the trees are silver maples and there are no partridges. Big stand of cutleaf coneflower just out of frame. Creeping bellflower greatly reduced - I expect that will be an eternal battle.

Yesterday evening we had one of those rains that is just perfect. Thunder, but far away. No wind. Water falling straight down enthusiastically, but not too fast. The sound and smell of sky and leaves getting washed. I looked out at the prairie and could almost feel it taking a good, big drink.
(in case you were wondering, this is it: https://wonderstate.com/products/organic-star-valley-decaf) I cannot recommend it highly enough. Best coffee I've ever had, anywhere. It makes me so happy.
