Born in 1890 in Vienna, he first made a name for himself with silent films such as Die Spinnen and Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler. Later, he cemented his reputation as an influential filmmaker with the expressionist masterpieces Die Nibelungen and Metropolis. After the Nazis came to power, he fled to Hollywood in 1933, where he directed classics like M and Fury and worked across a variety of genres.
