The cover for Questions for the Dead took a fun path.
I looked at covers for books that appeal to the kinds of readers I think would like my book -- private eye stories, unusual characters and off-center humor. 1/4

Not usually. A lot of what I write is set in familiar, contemporary locations, so I have a pretty good mental map in place.
One big exception: I wrote a crime novel (still looking for a home!) set in 1959 London Soho, at the dawn of the Mod subculture. For that, I found a vintage street atlas of post-war London that became my geographic bible.
